Edward James Salons & Spas in Putney and Clapham are collaborating with Stand Up To Cancer to fundraise for Cancer Research UK’s life-saving research.
Edward James has a jaw dropping celebrity client list that includes Cara Delevingne, Sophie Dahl, Joanna Lumley, Eleanor Tomlinson, Brenda Blethyn, Amanda Holden to name a few. And this Stand up to Cancer partnership came about following Edward finding moles on two clients during their appointments which turned out to be malignant melanoma.
Edward said ‘In one case it was something that I noticed and brought to the client’s attention, and this made me realise that as hairdressers and beauticians we can help our clients to spot skin cancer signs and symptoms early.’
Early diagnosis is pivotal for the successful treatment of melanomas, Edward James recognised that a hairdresser is in a unique position for raising red flags to their clients and recommending they seek medical advice ASAP. That was the thinking behind the collaboration and James hopes to raise awareness and encourage other hairdressers to be vigilant for the same warnings.
As part of the partnership with Stand Up To Cancer, Those fabulous people at Edwards James salons are now offering anyone who have recently gone through chemotherapy (that has been a client of theirs for longer than a year) free haircuts for 12 months whilst their hair regrows. The ‘pampering package’ also includes a number of manicures and pedicures to help strengthen the nails etc. which can be left weakened following the treatment.
Edward added ‘With my job comes a duty of care. As a hairdresser it’s part of my role to be able to provide support to those experiencing hair loss as a result of their cancer treatment’
Recognising that he is not a medical professional, Edward James says he and his team can look out for any possible signs of skin cancer when doing their jobs, and simply make their clients aware of what they are observing so that they can seek medical advice.
The second part of the fundraising efforts for Stand Up To Cancer, Edward James are launching the HOPE natural wax candle with an uplifting lemongrass aroma. The candle retails at £25 with £15 going to charity. These are available at Edward James Salons & Spas in Putney and Clapham Junction and online.
Edward and Stand Up To Cancer recommend to clients that if they notice any unusual changes to their skin, they should go straight to their doctor.
It’s important to remember:
- Tell your doctor if you notice a new mole, or any change in the size, shape or colour of a mole, freckle or normal patch of skin.
- Tell your doctor if you notice a growth or sore that doesn’t heal, or one that itches, oozes or scabs.
The team at Edward James Salons and Spas always stress to their clients that if they notice any unusual or persistent changes to their skin, make sure they call and have a consultation with their GP, as most skin cancers when caught at an early stage can be treated successfully.
Edward James recommends hairdressers follow the ABCDE rule when identifying moles on the scalp, as seen on the British Association of Dermatologists website. http://www.bad.org.uk/for-the-public/skin-cancer/melanoma-leaflets/abcd-easy-guide-to-checking-your-moles
